Windmills in floodlight; spectaculair sights during Illumination Week

From the 4th until the 9th of September you can admire the 19 windmills of Kinderdijk at night. The mills are illuminated by lights and the sights are beautiful. You can admire the windmills from afar or you can book tickets for a boat tour.

Trial with LED-lights

This year Kinderdijk will experiment with LED-lights for Illumination Week. Three windmills, two of which are the Museum Mills, will be highlighted by LED-lights instead of the traditional lighting system. Kinderdijk hopes to introduce a more enviromental friendly way to show the mills during Illumination Week. If the LED-lights deliver satisfying results the organisation will look into changing all of the lights to LED.

Photography workshop

Especially for photographers (beginners and professionals) we offer a photography workshop on Monday the 4th and Tuesday the 5th of September. The workshop is taught by Dutch nature photographer Marijn Heuts. Participants learn all about taking pictures at twilight and in the dark. The windmills are beautifuly illuminated and make for grateful study-objects. This workshop will take place at a private location and we’ve reached our maximum number of participants.

Traditional Mill Market on Friday

On Friday the 8th of September the traditional Mill Market takes place, with more than seventy illuminated stalls lighting up the streets of Kinderdijk. Locals sell products and antiques that are unique for the region. There’s also a special childern flea market. All the proceeds of the evening go towards the upkeep of the old local playground. The children of Kinderdijk have played here since 1949! The atmosphere of the Mill Market is great so we highly recommend a visit.
