Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage fully open for business again

As of Friday February 1, all visitor locations across the Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage grounds are open to the public once again. The Nederwaard museum windmill got a thorough overhaul, including a fresh paintjob for its lower floor and a total of 69 new cams fitted to the upper spurwheel of its interior mechanism. If you want to see the results for yourself, our millers would love to tell you all about it as they give you a tour of this monument from 1738!

Friday will also see the Wisboom pumping station reopen its doors. Our current visitors centre is the perfect spot to start your Kinderdijk visit. In the old engine room, which has been refurbished as a movie theatre, a multi-screen film will tell you more about the history of Kinderdijk and the countryside surrounding it, forever locked in an ongoing battle against the water. Your ticket will also grant you access to the Blokweer museum mill. As you tour the premises, the Molenhoek souvenir shop is the place to go to if you fancy relaxing over a cup of coffee, a cold drink, or a bowl of hot soup.

Maintenance activities on the Hopper tour boat have fallen slightly behind schedule. We currently expect it to be back in the water in about two weeks. Until then, it will enjoy an extended stay at the hangar of Den Breejen Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, where it is set to receive a fresh coat of paint as it undergoes a mandatory inspection performed every five years. Although the month of January is traditionally a quiet one, work on the new entrance zone and Visitors Centre has carried on relentlessly. The entrance zone is scheduled for use by mid-March, whereas the Visitors Centre will be completed in September.
