Kinderdijk at its best during Illumination Week

Every evening, from 8 to 11pm, all eyes and all floodlights are on the mills as they light up the night sky. Every year, pictures shot during Illumination Week are shared across the globe. We have decided to give our visitors a prime chance at taking the most exquisite pictures by hosting four photography workshops, one of which is especially intended for English speakers. On these evening workshops, professional photographers take their followers along to one of the millyards, ready to take their million-dollar shots when the magical ‘blue hour’ arrives. With just a few spots left, now is the time to book a spot for yourself!

If you prefer to relax and gaze on as the windmills slowly drift by, you’ll love the special evening-time boat tours we have scheduled throughout the week. We’ve got a premiere this year too, because our newly converted classic shuttle barge ‘Jantina’ will be joining our fleet. On Saturday night, she will be the only ship to sail the waters of the Nederwaard lower basin. Reservations are necessary for a trip on this special vessel.

The outdoor patio at Molenhoek will be open every night from 8-11pm. On Friday September 7, the area around Kinderdijk’s Schansweg street is the stage for the traditional annual windmill market. As is customary, revenues from this cherished tradition are allocated to the Kinderdijk Playground Foundation.

The final day of Illumination Week happens to coincide with the national Open Monuments Days. To suit the occasion, we will be hosting Deep Deep Children’s Theatre on Saturday September 8. This artistic duo from The Hague will feature two performances of their show ‘The Turn Of The Windmill’, at 12:30 and 3pm. You can enjoy either show at the Nederwaard museum windmill yard. We have more in store for our youngest visitors, however: they can dive into arts and crafts activities, play games, and get their faces painted by a make-up artist. Kinderdijk World Heritage will only be joining the National Monuments Days on Saturday, even though nationwide events are scheduled for the entire weekend, out of respect for local Sunday rest traditions.
