Preparations for Illumination Week are in full swing

Illumination Week is an annual highlight of the season here at Kinderdijk World Heritage. By now, preparations for the event are in full swing, as the first week of September promises to be a traditionally enchanting time indeed…

From 3 to 8 September, our nineteen windmills will be full-on in the spotlights throughout the dark hours of night. Every year, Illumination Week ensures phenomenal views for all to see – a genuine feast for all photographers! As we speak, preparations for this special event are in full swing.

Last year’s Illumination Week at a glance

If you really want to see the limelight shine on our all-star cast from up close and personal, your best option is to add tickets for one of our tour boats to your Kinderdijk (e-)ticket. For this special occasion only, our skippers extend their schedule with extra tours lasting right through the evening. Sit back and watch our illuminated windmills drift by like a gentle parade of brightly lit wooden giants. And if you’re really looking to add something special to your visit, have a look at our special exclusive one-night-only boat tour deal. For one special Illumination Week night only, you can enjoy a tour with a drink on the house in the company of an expert tour guide, sailing on our newest addition: the converted classic shuttle barge ‘Jantina’. We will also be serving drinks and snacks on the Molenhoek outdoor patio every night throughout Illumination Week.

Building on the resounding success of last year’s edition, we once again offer all (hobby) photographers a chance to attend special evening photography workshops. In every workshop, a seasoned professional photographer takes participants along on a nightly tour of exclusive locations to shoot the most breath-taking pictures of windmills in magical lighting. We will be open for your entries very soon, so keep a close eye on our website to make sure you reserve a spot. Of course, we traditionally conclude our Illumination Week with the lovely Windmill Market down in Kinderdijk village.
