A warm welcome to the all new Kinderdijk website!

Sometimes, it’s simply time to get an entirely new look – even if you’ve been holding your own for centuries, braving the storms and working night and day. Even the sturdy mills and pumps of Kinderdijk need a bit of a fix-up every now and then. Of course, we make sure that our old workhorses are inspected and maintained every year, but since the whole world searches and finds Kinderidjk UNESCO World Heritage online, it was about time to give our Kinderdijk website a serious overhaul.

Hot off the digital press

By bow, the result is clear to see; hot off the digital press. We’ve done our best to build a web environment worthy of UNESCO World Heritage status, and if we may say so ourselves, we think we did a pretty good job.

Bringing the past to the future.

Brand new

If you haven’t managed to suppress your curiosity and already took a quick peek at the site, you’ve probably noticed that we haven’t been holding back. The site has been completely revamped, with a brand new page layout, fancy colours and themes, plus a wealth of information on the UNESCO World Heritage site, our mills and pumps with their impressive history, the natural beauty of the sorrounding countryside, and the many cycling and hiking trails connecting Kinderdijk with the great cities of South Holland. That’s heaps of interesting info, both for Dutch people interested in taking a closer look at their national heritage and for all the other citizens of the world, because afer all, we’ve been listed as World Heritage for a reason!

Carrying the past into the future

In a way, it may strike you as peculiar to think that for many people, the Kinderdijk story is mainly about the past, back when the windmills were on their own in the effort to keep the Alblasserwaard soil dry. It might sound strange then, to hear all this talk about building these old-timers a hypermodern and smooth website. It’s a bit like taking an ancient historical windmills and having it run on solar power instead, you might say.  Still, here at Kinderdijk, we feel that we’ve done a pretty good job of connecting the old and the new. Of course, the Netherlands has a long history of struggling and working with the water to look back upon, but when you think about it, that future runs right on through the present day and onwards into the future.

More urgent than ever

The way we see it, Kinderdijk and its windmills are more current than ever. We all know that water levels are rising all over the world, and this makes the history of our country, where we have been dealing with water for as long as anyone can remember, particularly important. That is why even now, or perhaps especially now, it is vital to keep telling the tale of Kinderdijk to the whole world.

A great story

Alright. So much for the serious bit of our message. Let’s not forget to tell you about the fun part of the story, and the main reason for our website’s new look. Above all, the story behind Kinderdijk is a great and fascinating tale; one we love to keep telling to the whole world every single day. The hard work of the millers, who have kept these mighty windmills in action for generations, still appeal to the imagination of people around the world. Of course, not everyone in the Netherlands live in windmills, even though some tourists seem to expect us to, but windmills are inextricably linked to Dutch identity nonetheless. In this country of wind, water, and whirling sails, mills are simply a key ingredient of who we are and what we represent. Isn’t that all the reason you need to keep spreading a great story among all the visitors coming over for a personal experience of history? That’s just what we thought!

You are invited

So, without further ado and without giving away too many spoilers, we cordially invite you to have a look at our brand new website. We have lots of stunning new photos, to give an impression of the Kinderdijk atmosphere and to challenge anyone to bring their own cameras and take even more stunning pictures of Holland. We still tell a major part of the Kinderdijk tale, but we don’t tell you everything, just to keep your curiosity buzzing and tempt you to come by and have a personal taste of the story. This is how we want to show that Kinderdijk World heritage is a true adventure for all ages, whether you’re Dutch or a visiting tourist. So go on and have a good look around our all new website, but remember to consider our story an invitation and a “Once upon a time…”
