Kinderdijk

A lovely village in the shadow of the windmills

From our windmills, you’ll stroll right into the village of Kinderdijk, where it is plain to see how these modern times still have a place for the mills and the traditions of the Dutch polders.

The village of Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk is the name of the UNESCO World Heritage site and its windmills, but it is also the name of the adjoining village. Kinderdijk is a charming Dutch village, with a well-preserved village centre and picturesque streets in the old style of the region. A lovely village to get acquainted with. Step inside the local traditional bakery, visit the old church that has always served as the beating heart of the village, or gaze at the enormous shipyard that has become central to modern-day Kinderdijk life. An intriguing detail of Kinderdijk history: the village had the first electric power plant of the Netherlands, so in addition to the pumps, the street lights of Kinderdijk were very early to run on electric power! Of course, Grand Café De Klok with its bike rental and Grand Café Buena Vista are great places to get a taste of the local atmosphere, because the village of Kinderdijk has more to offer than windmills alone!
